Back when I was an “impulse buyer,” I would buy just about anything I wanted "in the moment" and would use one of my many credit cards.  

I had so many credit cards in my wallet that when I sat down, I had to sit sideways.  

It felt like a lot of "fun" to buy anything I wanted whenever I wanted  - until I got home and thought about it later.  

I never would have admitted it in those days, but I was actually "addicted to spending."

I had convinced myself I "needed" that geegaw (or why not even two or three of them?)... but later... later, I felt very ashamed when I realized I had bought stuff I not only didn't need but in reality didn't even want!  

It hurts to remember that feeling of shame.

I was caught in a terrible cycle of spending and spiralling debt, and felt like I could never get out of it.  

At one point I even thought "why even try to get out of debt?"  Heck everybody else had a ton of debt, why shouldn't I?  

It's kind of the "American way," isn't it?  

But I knew if I was going to take charge of my life I needed to do something.

At least my "higher self" knew that.  I still felt the urge to spend even more.

A friend of mine told me about a technique he had heard of to help people stop using credit cards, or at least to eliminate the need to use them right away.  

He said if I would get rid of all my credit cards and keep just one, there was a way to think twice before using it.  

The technique involves putting the card in a Tupperware container and filling it with water, then putting it in the freezer.

If I wanted to buy something—had an impulse—then I should go to the freezer, take the card out and let it thaw.  By the time the card thawed out, if I still wanted to use it, then I should go ahead.  

The theory is that it takes some time for the card to thaw and by the time it does, the impulse to use it may go away.

I decided to try this technique.  I performed "plastic surgery" on about 12 cards by cutting them to pieces, all but one.  

I took that one card, a Visa card, and did what my friend suggested by placing it in the freezer. 

Well, I was in a shopping mall later that same day and saw something that I really thought I had to have.  I ran home, got the card out of the freezer and put it in the microwave.  

Big mistake.  No one told me the card would melt in the microwave, so now I didn’t have any cards at all.

Then something amazing happened. With all of my credit cards gone, I learned that I could survive without them.  

• Not only did I survive, but as a result of financing my lifestyle on an all cash basis, I started to build a financial future that would not be ambushed by the credit card industry.
